Open Borders

How often do we miss out on the stories of people close to us because of our busy lives?

At Open Borders, nobody is a mere face in the crowd. Everyone has a story to tell, be they migrant or local, professional writer or not. Shine a spotlight on these faces with us through storytelling, and celebrate the power of the spoken word to build bridges between Singaporean, migrant, and international communities.

Migrant Book Fair

With two editions so far, the Migrant Book Fair aims to introduce new migrant writers, build a healthy community, and strengthen bonds through the love of literature. During the fair, writers are invited to share about their writing journeys, with their published works spotlighted and made available for purchase.

Migrant Arts Festival

International Mother Language Day is celebrated every year on 21 February. First announced by UNESCO on 17 November 1999, the date was chosen in tribute to the Bengali Language Movement. On 21st February 1952, students were killed in Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh (then east Pakistan), as they protested for Bengali to be recognised as the official language. International Mother Language Day honours their sacrifice and celebrates language and cultural diversity across the world.

In 2022, Migrant Writers of Singapore marked International Mother Language Day by holding a Book Fair and Language Exchange. Through stories, games, songs and conversations, participants learned the history of International Mother Language Day and shared about their own language and culture
